DIFFERENCE
I often fail to grasp what makes one thing different from another. Most of the time, it comes down to something trivial: I have not looked closely enough, I simply do not know enough, or I am not paying attention. So I may be moved by something much like what I have encountered before, or overlook something I am encountering for the first time. Even when I notice a difference, I often forget it. That only makes matters worse.
And so I go through my days without fully understanding, passing one difference after another.
MAKING
Even when we do not grasp everything in an experience, we take it in as a whole and remember it that way. We may not fully understand something, yet know what it is. The two are not contradictory; both can be true at once.
What catches me in an experience remains, even when I am no longer thinking about it. In making, I do not try to replace what has fallen away. I connect what was happening at the time with what form can do, and retrace the experience. I build the work through choices about what to retain and which form to use.
